How to Get to the Makarska Riviera
Why the Makarska Riviera Is Called the Dalmatian Côte d’Azur
The Makarska Riviera has earned the nickname "Dalmatian Côte d’Azur" for a reason. Nowhere else on the Adriatic do the mountains descend so dramatically into the sea, creating a palette of blues, greens and warm stone tones that feel almost unreal. If you drive along the Adriatic Highway (Jadranska magistrala) at sunrise or sunset, the experience becomes something unforgettable. The sky softens into gold, the sea mirrors the mountains, and the entire coastline feels like a once-in-a-lifetime cinematic moment, the kind that stays with you long after your holiday ends.
Arriving by Car
If you’re traveling to the Makarska Riviera from Germany, Austria, Hungary or Central Europe, the most comfortable route is via Zagreb, continuing south on the A1 highway or the Adriatic Highway along the coast.
Entering from the Southeast (Ploče direction)
The Riviera begins near the town of Ploče. After passing the beautiful Baćina Lakes, you’ll reach Gradac, the first town of the Makarska Riviera, just 12 km after the turnoff.
Arriving from the Northwest (Omiš direction)
If you’re coming from Split or Omiš, the entry point is the Dubci Pass, where the inland road from Šestanovac meets the coast. This route offers stunning views over Brela, Baška Voda and the northern Riviera.
Arriving Over Biokovo (from Vrgorac)
For those arriving from the inland town of Vrgorac, the approach over Biokovo is extraordinary. After driving through rugged mountain scenery, the entire Riviera suddenly opens before you, from Drašnice to Podgora, Tučepi, Makarska, Brela and all the way to the islands of Brač, Hvar, Korčula, and the Pelješac Peninsula. It’s one of the most breathtaking arrivals in Croatia.

Heritage, villages and the iconic Biokovo mountain
A Riviera Where Heritage Meets the Sea
Throughout the Makarska Riviera, you’ll find old stone villages resting quietly beneath the cliffs of Mount Biokovo - places where traditional architecture, old houses and taverns preserve the spirit of the region. Along the coast, charming fishing villages have transformed into modern seaside towns with hotels, villas and promenades - yet still beautifully intertwined with the local heritage. No matter which direction you arrive from, one thing awaits you:
Biokovo - the guardian of the Riviera.
Majestic, timeless, and protective, rising high above a coast dotted with towns like a string of pearls at its feet.
It is one of the most spectacular natural backdrops you will ever see and the signature landscape of your stay at TUI BLUE Adriatic Beach.
